Islam in Newcastle – Challenge the Stereotype!

Fajr Time

Fajr Time!

It was still dark and my bed very warm My alarm clock rang like a thundering storm

The light switch was far and out of reach I clung to my bed covers like a hungry leech

The warmth was comforting to my skin But I did not want the devil to win

I flung the quilt to the end of my bed Then with a mighty pull I lifted my head

I recited the ‘waking up’ supplication Then awakened with full concentration

I got out and rushed through the landing with a vroom And made my way to the empty bathroom

I turned on the tap and said bismillah The cold water creeping down my hands like a caterpillar

I washed my mouth, nose and face Making sure the water touched every place

I poured water over my right arm and left Then wiped my head and ears to effect

I finally washed both of my feet Then back to my bedroom dressed up neat

To stand up purified before Allah I began to whisper Al-Fatiha

The coldness of the air becoming sweet I felt the serenity of every heart beat

As I bowed and prostrated in the perfect way I could have stayed in this position all day

But the best part was when I raised my hands Every nerve in my body began to make demands

Tears flowed gently down my cheeks I could have done this for days and weeks

My lips trembled from calling His names The whispering devil trying to play games

I ignored him and carried on with my pleading He carried on his devilish feeding

But soon he fled like a frightened old man As I got up to recite the Holy Quran

Making my voice a sweet melody So Angels pass by and listen steadily

The sky became light and it was sunrise soon I glimpsed the fading of the distant moon

Fajr time was nearly over and gone As the rising sun in the horizon shone
