KFC is this week testing a number of halal restaurants at several locations in London.

Customers visiting outlets in locations including Upton Park, Bethnal Green and Tottenham Hale will be able to eat food products fully approved by the Halal Food Authority.

KFC vice-president of marketing Jennelle Tilling says: “We want to see how customers respond to the trial, to see if this is something that allows us to make our great tasting food available to a broader range of customers.”

Other outlets involved in the trial are located in Lea Bridge Road, Beckton, Edmonton, Hounslow West and Forest Gate.

KFC says the trial will be evaluated after a few months.

The company says that it will use its existing suppliers to stock its halal approved chicken. However, for customers who do not wish to eat halal, they will be able to visit another KFC store nearby that is not part of the trial.

Halal Food Authority president Masood Khawaja says it has worked closely with KFC “to accredit the usage of the HFA logo and symbol of approval on endorsed products”.

In March KFC launched an ad campaign to emphasise that its Original Recipe chicken on the bone is delivered fresh and freshly prepared in-store. The TV ad, created by Bartle Bogle Hegarty, was shot in an actual KFC kitchen in an attempt to change the brand’s image as a “fast food” chain.

Our Halal Trial

At KFC we listen to our customers – and the views of our customers help us to evolve the menu and choices we offer. For some time we have had requests to provide a halal offer in parts of the UK. As a result of this, we are running a halal trial in a small number of stores in the London area.

The stores taking part in the trial are:

* Lea Bridge Road – E10 7DN

* Beckton – E6 4LG

* Edmonton – N18 2XA

* Hounslow West – TW4 7DJ

* Upton Park – E13 0AR

* Forest Gate – E7 8BA

* Bethnal Green – E2 0AH

*Tottenham Hale – N17 9FR

We have worked with the Halal Food Authority to understand the requirements involved in supplying and producing halal approved products. We are delighted that the HFA have certified KFC’s products in these stores, and the store environments, as halal. Another key consideration for us was that we were able to ensure that the halal certified chicken would also meet the rigorous animal welfare standards we employ in the UK, and we consulted leading animal welfare groups about this. We are pleased to say that there will be no compromise to our welfare standards. We continue to insist that our poultry is stunned before slaughter and only buy high quality, Grade A, farm-assured chicken from trustworthy suppliers who are contractually required to meet or exceed all UK and EU legislation for quality and welfare, and this will not change. You will find that our food is just as tasty and finger lickin’ good as it has always been!
