Islam in Newcastle – Challenge the Stereotype!

IDC is proud to present ‘Islam: Racism & Slavery’ in conjunction with Northumbria University Islamic Society as aprt of the Northumbria University Students Union Diversity Week.

3 presentations are scheduled for the Diversity week from Monday 1st December to Thursday 4th December, which will prove to be a highly beneficial and informative set of presentations to enlighten the individual about extremely important and topical issues in contemporary times.

Our guest speakers are highly experienced and qualified in the topics being discussed , which is being timely addressed after the celebration of black history month and the recognition of the slave trade. The following topics are being presented: Monday 1st December ‘Islam, Africa & the Slave Trade’ AbdulHaq Ashanti [UK] ‘enslavement’ Abu Imraan Eshroko[RUS] Thursday 4th December ‘Islam’s Solution to Racism’ Abu Usamah ath-Thahabi [USA]. All presentations will start at 7pm sharp and there will opportunities to visit stalls and register on the door from 6pm.

Islam, Africa & The Slave Trade – Abdul Haq Ashanti
Monday 1st December | Northumbria University Students’ Union 6pm – 9pm

Following the success of black history month this year and last years Diversity week Idc along with Northumbria University ISOC have invited Abdul Haq Ashanti to present the talk ‘Islam, Africa 7 the Slave Trade’, IDC invites you to the first presentation by Abdul Haq Ashanti in Newcastle upon Tyne. The presentation will be a brief introduction about Islam, what it is, how it spread to Africa, a history of Islam and Slavery and a mention of some of the slave revolts lead by Muslim slaves. A concise explanation of the correct understanding of slavery in Islam as opposed to western slavery and a brief mention of modern day slavery

Abdul Haq Ashanti

AbdulHaq Ashanti has been Muslim since 1994. He was born in Oxford and his parents are from Ghana. He graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 2000 and also completed an MA in African Studies in 2001, specialising in the history of Islam in Africa. He has lived and worked in Riyadh, KSA and has also travelled extensively in Africa and the Middle East. He has authored a book entitled Defining legends which is on the topic of Islam in Africa, slavery and Islam in the experience of people of African origin

Enslavement – Abu Imraan Eshroko
Monday 1st December | Northumbria University Students’ Union 6pm – 9pm

Abu Imraan returns to Diversity week after last years success to present the talk ‘Enslavement’ in which he will discuss slavery in the Islamic context, the permissible and impermissible types. What slavery is in modern times and how Islam liberates people away from enslaving themselves through materialism and other than that.

Abu Imraan Eshroko

Abu Imraan was born in Russia into a Muslim family. Moving to the UK in 1993, it was around this time that he started practicing Islam. He learnt Arabic and has since translated extensively at seminars for the scholars and students of knowledge. He is currently director of Al-Burhaan Institute, Leicester, UK which offers regular classes throughout the week. He travels the length and breadth of the UK to clarify the true nature of Islam to both Muslims and non Muslims.

Islam’s solution to Racism – Abu Usamah athThahabi
Thursday 4th December | Northumbria University Students’ Union 6pm – 9pm

Abu Usamah athThahabi comes to this years Diversity week as a special guest to present the talk ‘Islam’s solution to Racism’ in which he will bring personal experiences of racism in the Us and the UK and give the official Islamic understanding on such a large and inmportnt topic.

Abu Usamah ath-Thahabi

Abu Usaamah was born in New Jersey in 1964 and brought up as a practising Christian. He embraced Islam in 1986 and went onto studying in the Islamic University of Madinah for eight years where he graduated from the College of Da’wah and Usool ad-Deen. He has been the Imaam of various mosques in the US and in the UK. His zeal and eagerness in conveying the true message of Islam has led him to many parts of the world, delivering lectures and seminars, as well as translating for many scholars around the world.‘Abu Usamah will present the topic of racism and Islam’s solution to it in a presentation which will discuss Islams position on racism. The presentation will include a brief introduction about Islam, what it is, how it deals with Racism, examples and personal experiences of racism in the US and the UK, and how best to deal with it, with an emphasis on how racism is a form of extremism and oppression.
